CRRAACCK! “That’s not good” I thought as I looked up to scope out the routes we were about to climb. “My neck just cracked when I looked up” I said to Gaelyn. “I keep telling you we need those glasses” she said. She was right…
I finally bit the bullet and bought a pair of the CU Belay Glasses. They are priced high, no doubt. At $150, it’s hard to decide on another rope or…

Today, I go over carabiner orientation. Should you screw up or screw down? Well, today I set the record straight. It depends if you are using carabiners on an anchor, or using them on your belay loop. Tune in today to see why. Anyone do something…

In this video, I review the Black Diamond Gridlock Carabiner. This is, hands down, the best carabiner for belaying single pitch. I don’t recommend it for multi-pitch because it isn’t very versatile. But for single pitch, it’s the best. It eliminates cross loading! Also, watch the video to learn how to easily use this carabiner and attach it without drama and fuss.
Anyone have t…

In today’s video I review the Metolius Rock Rings. At $30, I think every climber needs to own a pair of these. They can be hung anywhere and are very versatile. You can do pull ups, rows, and dips from them like you would with gymnastic rings. I have been using them as a poor man’s way to train forearm endurance. You can get a wicked pump doing interval hangs and moving hangs. Get…

Here’s the hottest, newest, or just downright coolest climbing gear on the market for 2011. It’s all in that “stocking stuffer” price range that we look for, because let’s be honest, we don’t love our climbing partners that much. If I got this stuff for Christmas, I would be pretty psyched. So here it is:
1. Black Diamond Gridlock Carabiner
I think this is the best belay carabiner…

In today’s video, I review the Kettlebell Cardio DVD that was made by Hybrid Athlete. Hybrid Athlete is run by two brothers, Anthony and Joe. At their gym, they hold Crossfit classes, Hybrid Athlete classes, and Kettlebell Cardio classes. Each one is unique but they are all hard! This is the first DVD they have put out and it is excellent. They have created a training program,…

Our recent Fall protocol is to drive down on Saturday morning to avoid a cold night in the tent. This time was no different and we got to Summersville Lake around noon. The conditions were perfect. The sun was shining and it was starting to warm up the area. I even cracked a sweat hiking in! Time for a warm-up climb… or so I thought.
Make Way For Dyklings (5.10a) – The rout…

After our late arrival on Friday night, we were relieved to find the shelter at Land of the Arches Campground not too full. We threw down our pads and crashed hard. The temperature was dropping quickly and avoiding a night in the tent was fantastic.
Saturday morning was brisk, although the sun was already shining brightly. We drove over to Muir Valley later in the morning, attempting…

“There’s something magical about this place. It’s just so peaceful and relaxing. Do we have to go home today?” We watched the squirrel play across the street in the park as we finished our breakfast at the Vandalian for the second day in a row. This place, the New River Gorge, just feels right… it feels like home.
The nights have been getting cold so to avoid the chill and an…

My old Sportiva Katanas were giving up the ghost. They had been resoled twice and some serious funk had developed over the past couple years. I needed new shoes. I was looking for something with a little more performance than the Katanas but still with good edges, and of course, velcro. Enter the Sportiva Miura VS.
The Miuras seemed like the natural choice for an upgrade to my…
