Memorial Day at the New

new river gorge, rock climbing, second buttress

For the first time this year, the weather forcast looked good for Memorial Day weekend.  We took full advantage and decided to head down to the New River Gorge for a nice, three day weekend.  But, without fail, when we arrived on Friday night, it was pouring.  It proceeded to rain for hours on end, leaving lots of standing water all around the campground.  We were able to set up the tent…

Vook Climbing iPhone App Review

rock climbing for beginners Vook

I was recently contacted by Vook to review their new product:  Rock Climbing for Beginners iPhone application.  I had never heard of Vook before this, but it is basically a book and video content combined into one application.  They make this specific rock climbing app for the iPhone, iPad, as an iBook, and for the Kindle.  I have an older iPhone 3G so I downloaded the iPhon…

Spring Showers at the New

New River Gorge

We celebrated the last day in April by doing what we do best:  climbing at the New River Gorge!  The weather in April has been quite poor for climbing.  However we were treated to a beautiful Saturday and spent the day at Sandstonia at Bubba City.  But before that, we had to have an O.T.W.G. at The Vandalian.

As some of you might know, Gaelyn is a little scared of falling, so we chos…

Rainy Red River Gorge

Red River Gorge

Rain, rain, and more rain can describe my latest trip to the Red River Gorge.  But, we did get out and climb a little!  We arrived late on Thursday night and it proceeded to rain early Friday morning.  After picking up a friend at Miguel’s (we camp at Land of the Arches), it was recommended to us to go to Drive-By Crag at the PMRP.  We had never been there before, but Drive-By is really nic…

Spring Day at Coopers Rocks

It’s been a very rainy April.  A couple of weeks ago, Gaelyn and I went bouldering at Coopers Rocks, WV during one of the few rain-free days.  It was a bit windy, but we had a great day in the forest climbing some classic gritstone problems.

Please let me know what you think of my first climbing highlights video in the comments…

Podcast: Goals for 2011

Join me in today’s podcast as I talk about my goals for this year.  I have some lofty goals, but I think I can accomplish them all!  Some of my goals include climbing many 5.11’s this spring, picking up where I left off last fall.  I would also like to climb more trad this summer at Seneca and the New River Gorge.  This fall, I’ll be trying to complete my first 5.12.

Video: Types of Climbing Explained

“What is sport climbing compared to top roping.  Is it even a sport?”

First of 2011

new river gorge, rock climbing, climber, summersville lake

The chilly mornings of early Spring convinced us to drive to the New River Gorge on Saturday morning, rather than our usual Friday night.  We learned last Fall that climbing wasn’t all that fun until 10 or 11 am, once the sun had come out to warm everything up and you could feel your fingers!  This turned out to be the best decision of the trip.  The New saw heavy rain on Friday night but…

Rock and Resole Review

la sportiva, katana, rubber, rock and resole, edge, shoe repair

Are the edges on your climbing shoes worn and rounded?  Is the rand poking through the rubber? Don’t get a new pair of shoes.  Get those comfy, broken in shoes resoled!

The edges on my La Sportiva Katanas were shot.  I needed another resole.  I got my first resole last year from Rock and Resole, located in Boulder, Colorado.  They did an awesome job, so I sent them to Rock and Reso…
